A Brief History of the Choctaw

When European powers arrived in what is now called North America they encountered a Choctaw people with a myth-enshrouded origin and a complex political and social system.

The Choctaw remained an independent people and had many dealings, as equals, with the Europeans and later with the United States before being removed from their ancestral lands. The process of removal split the Choctaw, yet both groups have managed to overcome great odds and prosper .
